Go Over The Edge with Tim!
Sparc is an agency in Springfield, Illinois that provides vital support to individuals with developmental disabilities. Sparc’s services for adults include vocational training, job coaching, supported employment and community based housing. Sparc also hosts an annual summer camp for children under 21 known as Kamp Kaleidoscope. Our daughter, Anna, participates in Kamp Kaleidoscope and absolutely loves it!
I have had the privilege of serving on Sparc's board of directors for more than 7 years. I am currently the board chairperson and serve alongside some very terrific people. Together we are doing some amazing things to help folks that often are not able to help themselves.
On May 13, 2017, I had the opportunity to participate in a pretty bizarre fundraiser to help Sparc. On that day Sparc hosted an Over-the-Edge fundraising event. The premise behind this fundraiser is to overcome your fears, much like the folks who Sparc serves overcome obstacles every day. The challenge was to rapel off of a tall building - in this case, Springfield’s 12-story Abraham Lincoln Hotel. Last year I was able to personally raise over $1,500. There were a total of 40 participants, and together we raised over $50,000 for Sparc.
As the day of the event grew near, our son Jay, an Eagle Scout who adores his sister, Anna, asked if he could rapel in my place. In scouting climbing and rapelling were among his favorite activities. Also, at the time Jay was just a few months from leaving home for his first year in college. For those reasons, I happily stepped aside and surrendered my place to Jay.
This year it is my turn! I want to experience the thrill of going Over the Edge while supporting Sparc (and Anna). Please help me reach my goal of $1,000 so that I can experience what Jay experienced last year.
